4:22 pm - June 21st, Cornerstone Bible Church: Third Annual James 1:27 Sunday
|
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:27
With our third annual James 1:27 Sunday, we have finally gotten our website up and running! Please take a look: http://www.cbcbible.org/j127/
While it is most specifically geared to the members of Cornerstone Bible Church, and in general has the Christian perspective on caring for orphans, I invite everyone to go and take a look and see just what there is out there--the sad statistics both within the US and the world at large, the trials and dangers that orphans face, but more hopefully, the ways that we who are more fortunate may be able to serve them.
We do this because God has loved us enough to adopt us into His heavenly family, and this is only a small, weak reflection of that love for us, in our loving others.

12:03 pm - It's been fifteen years, if not more
|
Went to Disneyland yesterday, 'cos it's free on your birthday. Man, most of it was just like I remember it. A few new rides, including the Indiana Jones one...which broke down three times while I was in there. That was sad. The last time, they just came and walked us out because it was going to need some seriousdowntime for repairs.
But man, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, the Matterhorn, Star Tours...and best of all, since it was a Thursday, the lines were pretty short, and it was just fun walking around and seeing everything again. Of course, at first I walked into California Adventure (which I do want to go to sometime, but after 15 years...) and I had to go see Guest Relations to get into Disneyland instead. Since I turned around right away, they were gracious and let me do that, no problem.
Actually thinking about getting an annual pass so I can go back more frequently, especially when other friends have their birthdays and stuff. All in all, a good birthday.

1:10 pm - Brief update, 6/2
|
Made an offer on two condos over the weekend. One (1bed1bath) is a lender-owned property, so they're not likely to give a counteroffer, just say yes or no. The other (2bed1bath) is a short sale, counteroffer is incoming.
Saturday night I slept zero hours, in part because my brain was too excited over the condos to shut down properly. Then I helped two girls at church move to a new apartment. I was dyyyyyyiiiiiing.
Now feeling rested, preparing for a trip to Disneyland on Thursday. And a day off on Friday. Ahhhhh.

8:41 pm - Holy crap, yet another update (but with 100% less woobiness): Palm Pre thoughts
|
(blah, fixed the html)
I have always been more partial to rugged phones that'll survive me dropping it on concrete than bells and whistles phones that are slim and shiny with cameras in them and that stuff. My previous phone was a small brick ( Sanyo RL-4930) and my current one is just a little bit less beefy ( Sanyo SCP-7050); it's military rated for shock, dust, and vibration resistance (though not water resistance because of the speakerphone grille on the lid). I like it quite a lot, and it does indeed take some pounding.
But I must admit that the convenience and utility of smartphones has been growing on me. Sadly, I am on a Sprint family plan, and their offerings have been lackluster. I also am vaguely annoyed by some of the iPhone limitations and proprietary stuff from Apple, and am largely unimpressed by Blackberries currently. And then they came out with the Palm Pre, which is indeed for Sprint.
It's pretty nice. Got the Best of CES award back in January, is generally very well-reviewed, and while there is bound to be some hype attached to this (given that Palm is basically staking its continued survival to this thing), looking at all its specs has rather impressed me. Biggest win: having both the touch screen (which admittedly may be dangerously close to the iPhone's mechanics) plus a slide-out full keyboard. I'm still going to do most of my email checking and such at my desk, but being able to do this on the fly when really necessary is becoming more and more vital, I have been finding as of late. And having the web on tap for finding directions, looking up things, plus the built in GPS is quite tempting.
Of course, they still haven't revealed the cost of the thing, which will be a major factor in whether or not I go for one. That and the data plan cost. Besides, I've gotten along for several years now with a dumb phone, and this is not a necessity. But now I've got a realistic smartphone option coming up soon given the various limitations I've got, so...we shall see!

So it takes you nearly four months to get over Monica, and what do you do? Start crushing on another girl almost immediately. and she's like the only single white girl at church, you haven't been interested in a white girl since ninth grade
Time to figure out if this is just a passing fancy or something a little more concrete.

10:11 pm - Protip:
|
Paintball paint, it is not very tasty.
(Got shot in the grill of my facemask as I was yelling. Gag reflex kicked in nicely after a nice big lunch, had to apologize to the retreat staffers for the equipment dripping a bit more than usual.)
But that aside, the Cornerstone Bible Church Men's Retreat 2009 was quite excellent indeed. Fellowship, solid teaching on grace at work in our lives, and durian, which went down far easier than the paint.
So very tired now.

Really starting to look at buying a house this year. Most likely a condo or maybe an older, small townhouse, but something that I can call 'mine' will be a welcome change.

8:42 pm - I CAN HAS BALUT
|
I have encountered the egg of darkness, and I have conquered it.
A couple months ago, I went to the Vietnamese mall--Asian Gardens Mall in Westminster--where my uncle has his bakery. There is a food court there, as most malls have them, with various kinds of delights and tasty snacks. As I was wandering around a little, I noticed that a couple of the food stands had these pots of hot water with eggs floating in them. They were larger than your usual chicken eggs, and a little bit grayish. And then I looked closer, and saw the label. First there was... Hột vịt lộn', which didn't mean anything to me. Then my eyes tracked lower, and I saw 'balut'. Yes, boiled fetal duck.
If you need more explanation, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_(egg) and http://www.deependdining.com/2005/09/balut-egg-of-darkness-pinoy-pinay.html should prove to be enlightening!
Since that day, I'd been trying to round up some of my friends to go try it. Today, I made it out there with two of the guys from my church, Lawton and Chris. Chris is Vietnamese, and in fact has seen family members try it before, but hadn't himself eaten any. We were especially lucky in our timing: when we went up to the stand, there was a young Vietnamese couple right in front of us who got some as well, and we asked them if they could teach us how to eat it. They graciously agreed, and the lot of us went to sit down at a table nearby.
So first they showed us how to crack it open--gently smash the fat end open on the table, then put it back in the Dixie cup the vendors had given us as a sort of an egg stand. Peel away the shell at the top, and remove some of the membrane--which is veiny and brown at this point. Then add some salt and pepper for flavor, and...dig in with the spoon.
There were bits of flesh, and bone. No feathers, though. And I didn't spy a head in there. I'm sure those little squiggly things I found at one point were intestines, though!
All in all, it was like a very firmly boiled egg with bits of duck meat in it. I didn't love it, but I could grow to enjoy it. And you know, since there were a couple of guys who weren't able to make it out today, I'm going to go with them next time. Because it has to be experienced by more.
I'll have a pic to show hopefully soon. ke ke.

3:13 pm - Air Force One touches down at Long Beach Airport
|
Just came back from the parking lot, watched AF1 land right next door to us. That was pretty cool. The plane is huge. I might actually stay late at work tomorrow just to watch Obama take off to head back. Or is it the day after?
Oh, and there he goes on the helicopter down to John Wayne Airport, conveniently right next door to Costa Mesa and the OC Fairgrounds. Cool.

Do not send out the invites for a series of monthly meetings with a hundred or so invitees each all at once, because you will be picking about thousand accept/decline responses out of your teeth for the next hour.
